Treatment House Flies

Flies life cycle

The common housefly, Musca domestica, lives in close association with people all over the world. The insects feed on human foodstuffs and wastes where they can pick up and transport various disease agents. In addition to the housefly, a number of other fly species have adapted to life in human settlements, where they present similar problems. In warmer climates, the filth fly, M. sorbens is of particu lar interest in this regard. It is closely related to the housefly and considered important in the spread of eye infections. Blowflies (Calliphoridae) and other flies have been associated with the transmission of enteric infections.

Diseases transmitted by flies

Flies can spread diseases because they feed freely on human food and filthy matter alike. The fly picks up disease-causing organisms while crawling and feeding. Those that stick to the outside surfaces of the fly may survive for only a few hours, but those that are ingested with the food may survive in the fly’s crop or gut for several days. Transmission takes place when the fly makes contact with people or their food. Most of the diseases can also be contracted more directly through contaminated food, water, air, hands and person-to-person contact. This reduces the relative importance of flies as carriers of disease.

• Cholera:

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.

• Tuberculosis:

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by germs that are spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, or the spine.

• Anthrax:

The most serious complications of anthrax include: Your body being unable to respond to infection normally, leading to damage of multiple organ systems (sepsis) Inflammation of the membranes and fluid covering the brain and spinal cord, leading to massive bleeding (hemorrhagic meningitis) and death.

• Salmonella:

Salmonella infection is usually caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, and eggs or egg products or by drinking unpasteurized milk. The incubation period — the time between exposure and illness — can be 6 hours to 6 days. Often, people who have salmonella infection think they have the stomach flu.

Possible signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach (abdominal) cramps
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Headache
  • Blood in the stool

  • a persistent high temperature that gradually increases each day.
  • a headache.
  • general aches and pains.
  • extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • a cough.
  • constipation.

Other symptoms may include:

  • abdominal cramps or pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
  • dehydration, which can become life-threatening if left untreated

Treatment Methods

• Maintenance:

  • Make sure your windows, doors, and house vents are sealed properly and free from holes or other damage.
  • Use a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid, and take the bag out as soon as it’s full.
  • Store food properly in airtight containers.
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes or glasses out on the counter.
  • Clean up animal feces, such as in a cat’s litter box, right away.

• Traps:

Light trap

Light traps are boxes with a light in the back that attracts flies. When the flies try to get to the light, they’ll either be killed with an electric zap or trapped, depending on what kind of light trap you choose.

Be sure to mount light traps away from entrances and windows, so they can’t be seen from the outside. They should also be mounted within 5 feet of the floor.

Sticky traps

Sticky traps are strips of sticky paper that can be hung or laid down throughout your house. They’re not as effective as other traps, but can be added to help remove infestations.
